Licensed Chafer Beetle Treatment in Surrey - Guaranteed Results

Early Curative treatments need to be done before the end of September to be able to provide high effectiveness.

If crows are tearing up your lawn at dawn, or you can peel your turf back like a carpet, European chafer beetle grubs are almost certainly the cause. Surrey lawns have been among the hardest hit in Metro Vancouver since the pest was first confirmed spreading through the region, and the damage only worsens when left untreated. We provide professional chafer beetle treatment Surrey homeowners and commercial property managers can rely on - using licensed chemical treatments backed by a written guarantee. When your lawn matters, there is no room for guesswork.

What Is Chafer Beetle Treatment?

Chafer beetle control is the targeted application of registered larvicides to eliminate the white grub larvae of the European chafer beetle (Rhizotrogus majalis) before they destroy your lawn's root system. Understanding the pest's lifecycle is the first step to understanding why timing - and the right product - make all the difference.

The European chafer beetle completes its entire life cycle in one year. Adult beetles emerge in June, swarm at dusk into nearby trees to mate, and then females deposit up to 50 eggs each directly into exposed turf soil. Those eggs hatch around mid-July, and the newly hatched grubs immediately begin feeding on grass roots. The grubs moult twice over eight weeks, growing into C-shaped white larvae up to 25 mm long. They feed aggressively through the fall, overwinter just below the soil surface, and resume feeding again in early spring before pupating in April.

The grubs are the damaging stage. They sever grass roots at the soil line, leaving turf with no anchor and no ability to absorb water or nutrients. A heavily infested lawn feels spongy underfoot and can be rolled back by hand - the roots are simply gone. Skunks, raccoons, and crows detect the strong scent of the grubs and tear up already-weakened turf to reach them, compounding the destruction. According to the BC Ministry of Agriculture's European Chafer pest fact sheet, most of the root damage is caused by third-instar grubs in fall and early spring - which is precisely why treatment timing is critical.

Because the grubs are most vulnerable when they are small and newly hatched, lawn grub treatment is most effective when applied before or shortly after egg hatch in mid-July. A preventative application made before eggs hatch gives the best possible outcome. An early curative application can still deliver meaningful control when grubs are already present, provided the right product is used at the right time. We offer both options.

How Does Our Chafer Beetle Treatment Work?

We use two Health Canada–registered chemical larvicides - Acelepryn and Tetrino - applied by our licensed and certified technicians. The product we recommend depends on where you are in the season and the current state of your lawn. Here is how each treatment works.

Preventative Treatment (Acelepryn) - April Through June

Acelepryn (active ingredient: chlorantraniliprole) is our first-line preventative treatment, and it is the most effective option available for grub control Surrey properties. It is applied to your lawn between April through June, before adult beetles have laid their eggs and before newly hatched grubs have had any opportunity to feed.

Once watered into the root zone, Acelepryn works by disrupting the muscle function of insect larvae. When newly hatched grubs encounter the treated soil, they stop feeding and die - before they can cause any meaningful root damage. A single application provides season-long protection. Because Acelepryn is a restricted-use commercial product, it must be applied by a licensed applicator - it is not available to homeowners at retail. This is one of the key reasons our treatments deliver consistent, guaranteed results where DIY options cannot.

The April through June application window is the most important date range in chafer beetle management. If you have experienced grub damage in previous seasons, booking a preventative treatment before the end of June is the single most impactful step you can take to protect your lawn.

Curative Treatment (Tetrino) - Mid-Season

Tetrino (active ingredient: tetraniliprole) is our early curative treatment option, used when the preventative window has passed and grubs are already active in your soil. It is applied mid-season - typically from July thru September - and is effective against early-instar larvae that are actively feeding near the root zone.

Tetrino works by targeting the same muscle-control pathway as Acelepryn, but is formulated for faster uptake when grubs are already present. After application, the product is watered into the soil to reach the grubs at their feeding depth. While a curative treatment cannot undo root damage that has already occurred, it stops the infestation from progressing and protects the lawn through the remainder of the feeding season. For lawns where significant damage has already appeared, we will advise on the best combination of treatment and post-season restoration.

Why Chemical Treatment Beats Nematodes in Surrey

Nematodes - microscopic parasitic roundworms - are the most widely recommended DIY option for chafer beetle Surrey infestations, and they can work under the right conditions. The challenge is that those conditions are difficult to achieve consistently in Surrey's climate.

Nematodes require precise soil moisture and temperature. They must be applied to warm, consistently moist soil and watered in heavily every day for two to three weeks after application. Surrey's dry summers and Metro Vancouver's lawn watering restrictions make this extremely difficult to manage without a watering exemption permit.

Nematodes offer no guarantee. Research cited in Metro Vancouver's European Chafer Beetle Best Management Practices guide puts nematode success rates at approximately 75% under ideal conditions - meaning roughly one in four applications fails even when done correctly.

Nematodes must be reapplied every year. There is no residual protection; the nematodes do not persist in the soil from one season to the next.

Acelepryn and Tetrino are guaranteed. Our licensed chemical treatments are registered by Health Canada, applied by certified professionals, and backed by our written service guarantee - regardless of weather or soil conditions. One application per season is all that is required.

We are not dismissing nematodes as a concept. For homeowners who want a non-chemical approach and can meet the strict application requirements, they offer a partial solution. But for grub removal Surrey property owners who need reliable, guaranteed results, licensed chemical treatment is the clear choice.

Signs You Need Chafer Beetle Treatment in Surrey

Chafer beetle damage can appear gradually, then worsen rapidly - especially when wildlife foraging begins. Watch for these warning signs on your Surrey lawn:

Spongy turf underfoot - a soft, bouncy feeling when you walk across the lawn, caused by roots being severed below the surface

Turf that peels back like a carpet - if you can lift sections of sod with your hands, the root system has been largely consumed

Crow, raccoon, or skunk foraging - animals tearing up patches of lawn, especially in the early morning or evening, are following the scent of grubs

Irregular brown patches in late summer or fall - areas of dead or dying grass that do not respond to watering, often appearing in August or September

Visible white C-shaped grubs - if you cut back a 30 cm × 30 cm section of turf to a depth of 5 cm and find five or more grubs, treatment is warranted

If you are seeing any combination of these signs, do not wait. The longer an infestation goes untreated, the more root damage accumulates - and the more attractive your lawn becomes to foraging wildlife.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time for chafer beetle treatment in Surrey?

The best time for a preventative treatment is April through June, before adult beetles have laid their eggs and before newly hatched grubs begin feeding. If that window has passed, an early curative treatment with Tetrino can still be applied from mid-July thru September while grubs are small and actively feeding near the root zone. The earlier you act in the season, the better the outcome - but it is never too late to stop an active infestation from getting worse.

How many treatments does my lawn need?

In most cases, one application per season is sufficient to achieve effective grub control Surrey properties require. Our licensed chemical treatments - Acelepryn and Tetrino - are formulated for season-long residual activity with a single application. We do recommend once a year spring treatment to prevent a future grub infestation from occurring.

Is the treatment safe for children and pets?

Yes. Both Acelepryn and Tetrino have very low mammalian toxicity and are registered by Health Canada for use on residential turfgrass. We follow all label requirements for re-entry intervals after application, and it is safe for children and pets to return to the treated area once the area is dry. Our technicians apply treatments with professional equipment to ensure precise, controlled coverage.

What if the damage is already done - can you still treat?

Absolutely. If your lawn has already experienced visible root damage or wildlife foraging, an early curative treatment with Tetrino can stop the infestation from progressing and protect the remaining root system through the rest of the season. We will also advise on the best approach to lawn restoration - including reseeding and topdressing - once the grub population has been eliminated. Treating first and restoring after is always the correct sequence; reseeding into an active infestation is a waste of time and money.

Do you guarantee your chafer beetle treatment?

Yes. We stand behind our European chafer beetle treatment with a performance guarantee. If after having a Preventative or Early Curative treatment, live grubs are found in treated areas within four weeks after treatment, we will return, investigate and retreat if necessary at no additional charge. We are confident in our products and our application process - and we want you to be, too.
